The all chrome Haro team master. If you know, you know.
When I a young Gen X’er, 12 or 13, all I wanted was that bike — the Haro master all chrome. Ryan Huet, Scott Delalus? , maybe. He had the only one I had seen in person. He was older. Kind of a “tuff crowd”. He removed all of the decals so it just shined bright silver in the Ohio sun.
The bike was so expensive, even then. Simply a luxury far beyond my station.
I inherited a small aluminum frame BMX bike of no significance or value. Tarnished black & red paint. Rusted chain & spoke. And with my dad, a virtuoso of all craft and the greatest supporter of me making everything I could conceive by hand, I dismantled it on a picnic table in his backyard. Laid out on newspaper. All parts removed & accounted for, nut & bolt & cap —down to only the frame. I soaked the chain in motor oil. O’ The ancient alchemy of “chemical stripper” in those days. Muriatic or boric acid maybe ? No environmental guidelines or gloves for that matter. Back then my dad washed my hands with a gasoline soaked red shop rag. Leaded undoubtedly. I scorched the paint off with a handheld blow torch. Map gas. Wire brush & scrapper. Razor blades. Dental tools. And then finally sand paper—80grit to 800. The brushed aluminum looked like glitter. A million diamonds. Treasure. My hands, glorious, bright silver from the fine powder. There is a distinctive smell when you sand aluminum that fine. Almost like blood. It lingered in my head for what seemed the entire summer. Its probably still in my lungs. New chrome hand brakes & peddles. New jet black tires, chrome mag wheels. No reflectors. No insignias. No labels or makers marks whatsoever. Just a hard plastic beige seat — so beige it was pink. A mental failure of completion I carry today. It was a lesson of attrition. It took my entire summer vacation. I barely road it before I broke it all down again and painted it sky blue. To match my new Airwalk skate shoes.—Same back yard. Same picnic table. —
