I have always been captivated by the story of St.
Petersburg jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé —the House of Fabergé. At the request of Russian Tsars Alexander III, a gift for his wife, Maria Feodorovnain in 1885,
Fabergé created an opulent and legendary jewelled Easter egg—Encrusted with diamonds and rubies and golden straw. With that creation his appointment to the Imperial Crown’ by Alexander. “This marked the start of one of the most legendary series of objets d’art in history: Fabergé’s Imperial Easter Eggs. Intricate, elaborate and ostentatious, they were innovatively themed each year, opening to reveal a precious surprise.”
These eggs since have been shrouded in mystery. Dangerous love stories. Lost in revolution and social upheaval. Romanovs,Bolsheviks, Cossacks, the Kremlin. Of the recorded 52 Fabergé eggs which were gifted by the royal family during this time, the whereabouts of only 46 of them are accounted for. Vaulted in the secret stewardship of royal bloodlines and private collectors, whose obtainment of them are equally mysterious. There are currently 6 missing eggs. Imperial Treasures lost. Evoking treasure hunters for more than a century.
These eggs were considered a symbol of luxury and status. Lavish and grandiose. Each out shinning the next— Gifts of a grotesque splendor between the incestuous imperial families. Orgies of diamonds gold, pearls and gem stones and of course, Vodka.—Maximalism at its ultimate finest.
I am found wanting.
