A family of stage lighting.
My earliest days in Los Angeles were spent on a film crew. I was both lucky and grateful to fall into a group, a family, that became fast friendships and mentors. They quickly discovered my own intentions for being there had a different motivation— An artist, watching and collecting from” behind the scenes”. “The fourth wall”— a term used to describe the audience, the people viewing on the other side of the screen. Once a taboo not to be broken. Later became a wit and clever technique, an actor speaking directly to camera, a lens widening out to expose a set. The magick. The deception. In that space between the mirage and viewer lays something otherworldly, — a coalition of misfits and magicians. Vagabonds. Riggers and gaffers. Rag pullers and crafters. Bowler knots, stingers, and bag carts. — I carried a camera in my pocket. I snapped images of these carnies and their respective crafts. I made sculptures and drawings of them out of camera tape and short ends. The silhouettes left on the stages and backlots. Ladders standing tallest to smallest. C-stands stacked. Apple boxes like Jenga towers. Directors chairs emptied, a video village, grazing like gazelles in a downtown Joe’s parking lot at 3am. Arc lights, kenoflows, gobos and flags, perched high on Combo stands against the backdrop of chroma green. I painted these images on canvas. In a secret alliance with a nameless Universal studios representative I was allowed a privileged passage—to stay the nights in a building on “New York Street”—Armed only with a windup 35mm disposable film camera and a gifted golf cart for my sleuthing, I captured images of these false interiors and the shadows that they cast. There is something incredible about this void between the viewer and the vision. If you pull out just wide enough there are miles of cable running across stages through walls and catwalks. Connecting switchboards, ballasts and breaker boxes. Mimicking sunsets and rises. Star and street light.—
The nervous system of a leviathan. A network. And the provocation of a collection.
