Introducing A series of hand painted lanterns for the
MAHINA COLLECTION.
Each one of a kind visual narrative in ink and water colour by the incredible artistic talents of Marly Beyer
They tell a story of a waking dream. The golden glow of distant horizons in full floral bloom. Black pomegranate nightmares. Snakes and owls, songs and sonnets. Shipwrecks. Secret messages tied in twine, tucked in bottles and tossed to sea.
These truly are a story of close friendship. A common understanding of passion for creating. This collaboration has been on going for as long as we have known each other. And I have been a fan and admirer from the moment we met; Playing song for song in our neighborhood oyster bar. Fitting.
Connected by our common love of flower portraits and songs about falling in love with diner waitresses, we became fast friends. Marly works in ceramics, is a mural painter, a master mixologist, as well as teaches illustration and portraiture. Her handwork and gestural line I can only deeply envy. Amongst our hours of Dangerous Tea experiments, clove cigarettes, ear-piecing rituals and deep conversation on art, love&hate, Paul Gauguin and escapism, we managed to make LIGHT.

And indeed a story of escape. With my interest of origin, and collection of creation stories, and a kingdom creating by night, I find myself in a dreamscape.
Ship-wrecked in a Paul Gauguin landscape. A message in a bottle. Impressionistic colour fields. A culture clash of the late 1800s. Tahitian moons & Hurricanes. Oil smoked bronze.
The dark rich green forest canopies. Floral blooms, quills and feathered fowls. Hammered hides of rays and skates. Pink sand. Rattan…
